Dunki (2023) – Plot Summary
Dunki is a heartfelt drama that follows the journey of a group of Indians who dream of going to the United Kingdom for a better life, but are unable to do so through legal means. Instead, they resort to the dangerous and illegal backdoor immigration route known as the “donkey route” (locally called “Dunki”).
The story begins in Punjab, where Manu (Taapsee Pannu), along with her friends Buggu and Balli, aspires to settle in the UK. They meet Hardy (Shah Rukh Khan), a former soldier who joins them in their mission. After failing their IELTS exams and facing rejection from legal immigration paths, they decide to take the illegal and dangerous donkey route—crossing borders through Pakistan, Iran, Afghanistan, and Turkey, enduring extreme hardship, violence, and personal trauma.
Tragedy strikes multiple times, especially after the heartbreaking death of their friend Sukhi, and the group barely survives the life-threatening journey. Eventually, they reach London, only to realize that life as undocumented immigrants is far from what they imagined—filled with fear, humiliation, and exploitation.
Hardy, unwilling to lie about his past, is deported back to India, while the others stay behind by applying for asylum or using fake marriages. Years later, Hardy reunites with the group in an emotional climax, and together they return to their village. Manu, who is terminally ill, passes away peacefully after finally fulfilling her dream of coming home.
