It’s 1943 in WWII. The Allies plan a major invasion of Sicily but fear fierce German defense. To mislead Hitler, British intelligence devises a daring deception: they’ll fake an Allied invasion of Greece and Sardinia.
The Deception Plan

Lt. Cdr. Ewen Montagu (Colin Firth) and RAF officer Charles Cholmondeley (Matthew Macfadyen) lead the secret operation. They obtain a body (Glyndwr Michael) to pose as “Major William Martin” of the Royal Marines.

The team crafts a detailed backstory: forged ID, personal items (like an engagement ring receipt and fiancée photo), and—most crucially—a briefcase with false documents indicating that the Allies will invade Greece and Sardinia, not Sicily.

The corpse is transported by submarine (HMS Seraph) off the Spanish coast (in neutral Franco’s Spain). Once washed ashore near Huelva, local authorities find it.
